Before thinking of buying a Zune, I was well aware that it cannot be used as an external hard drive much like iPod, (which Windows detects as a new drive under 'My Computer'). I wanted a portable hard drive to bring my important files with me whenever I travel or go out. I wanted the Zune to serve as my backup drive since I don't think that I'll be able to fill up the whole 30GB with music, photos or videos.
It was disappointing at first since portable hard drives are quite expensive here in the Philippines. A simple 60GB external 2.5" drive costs 5,000 to 6,000 Pesos (can only be used as a storage device). With Zune as a portable drive, it could be an all-around device, beaming files to wifi capable PC's in the future. With that discouraging fact of the Zune, I ended up asking for one anyway.
I knew that as soon as Zune hits the stores and uses by actual consumers...It would not be long that a hack would be made and shared making the Zune a dream storage, music, video, wifi machine. I was right. A hack just like that has just surfaced recently.
The hack makes Windows recognize Zune as an external drive with a single tweak in the Windows registry, thanks to a zune user who posted his discovery on a Zune-related forum/site.
UPDATE: Zune can now transfer any files to another Zune! (.pdf, .zip and movies)
