    Microsoft loses $100M from Zune

The blogosphere is buzzing with rumors that Microsoft is slowly going out of the mp3 market and abandoning it’s zune device and marketplace. This came after news of Microsoft’s Form 10-Q SEC filing which according to the filing, “Zune platform revenue decreased $100 million or 54% reflecting a decrease in device sales.”

Even Intel, the world’s biggest computer chip maker, closed it’s Philippine plant (Malaysia and USA as well) leaving 1,800 jobless. So, maybe it’s the effect of recession all around the globe that's affecting Microsoft and every other tech company out there.

Do you think that Microsoft will abandon the Zune anytime zoon? I hope not!

    Zune Originals <3 Valentines Day

Zune will offer customers free engraving (a $15 value) for any design in the Valentine’s Collection between January 15 and February 14 and playlists from each artist will also be featured on Zune Marketplace for download. Zune is also making the Zune 120GB device widely available in red just in time for Valentine’s Day at ZuneOriginals.net and at major retailers nationwide including Amazon.com (www.amazon.com/zune ) and Wal-Mart.

Artists in the Valentine’s Collection include:

    • Gary Fernandez – new contributing artist to Zune Originals, this Vancouver BC-based illustrator and graphic designer created a fluid and rhythmic composition that represents the idea that music and love make the world go around.
    • Rubens LP – a Brazilian-born illustrator who’s new to Zune Originals says this piece is about kissing. That moment when time stops and 2 lovers find each other and the world disappears.
    • Sanna Annukka – also a new contributor to Zune Originals, this design by Finnish-English illustrator and printmaker depicts two song birds entwined amidst a garden of flowers which are encouraged by music to blossom into explosions of pattern.
    • Si Scott – new to Zune Originals and known for his unique blend of hand-inked design mixed with modern & traditional typography, Scott uses swans (known to mate for life) in his design to convey the universal belief that there’s a true soul mate for everybody.
    • Tado – second-time contributors to Zune Originals, the design-duo explains that this design is a light-hearted twist on a classic romantic evening.

Reebok is to Zune as Nike is to Apple

For those of you who are zune collectors of everything “limited” they produce, you might want to check out these Reebok Answer Zune 8GB Edition sneakers.

The weird-looking sneakers features the zune logo all over the shoe and it comes with an 8GB Zune preloaded with Allen Iverson content like commercials and selected playlists.

Only 72 sets were made worldwide last July 2008. Some are already in eBay right now.

By the looks of it, those shoes were really meant to be collected and kept… please don’t wear them outside.

Ballmer: We will not abandon the Zune

    Steve Ballmer gaming

Several publications have taken Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's assertion that software is a big part of Zune's future to mean that Microsoft plans to abandon Zune hardware. But a spokesman says Microsoft has no plans to abandon Zune, although it will consider developing the service for third-party mobile platforms.

"Basically, what happened last week, Steve [Ballmer] said a couple of things about the category," said Adam Sohn, head of Microsoft's Zune marketing division, causing speculation that Microsoft would stop making Zunes. However, he clarified, "we're not getting out of the hardware business at all," adding that Microsoft is "deeply committed" to continuing to its Zune hardware strategy.

Still, he told us about some other interesting twists and turns in Microsoft's roadmap for Zune, possibly including Zune music apps for non-Windows-Mobile phones. He didn't mention iPhone or Android by name, but made it clear that the company is ruling nothing out in its plans for a "multi-tuner" world in which music collections are less tied to specific devices.

    By Alexander Villafania
    INQUIRER.net

The Philippine Daily Inquirer logo.PANGASINAN, Philippines -- A few Filipino owners have reported being affected by the "Zune Bug," a problem just recently found in which the internal clock of the Microsoft Zune multimedia player freezes up on exactly January 1, 2009.

The creator of local Zune fan site ZunePH has posted two messages as of January 1 discussing the problem. The creator also warned those who owned the 30 Gigabyte version of Zune, which came out in 2006. This model is said to have a problem counting leap years and so would not boot up…

    Official Microsoft Statement

    Zune logo

    Image via Wikipedia

Early this morning we were alerted by our customers that there was a widespread issue affecting our 2006 model Zune 30GB devices (a large number of which are still actively being used). The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year.

That being the case, the issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you're a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device.

Customers can continue to stay informed via the support page on zune.net (zune.net/support).

We know this has been a big inconvenience to our customers and we are sorry for that, and want to thank them for their patience.

Q: Why is this issue isolated to the Zune 30 device?
It is a bug in a driver for a part that is only used in the Zune 30 device.

Q: What fixes or patches are you putting in place to resolve this situation?
This situation should remedy itself over the next 24 hours as the time flips to January 1st.

    Q: What's the timeline on a fix?
The issue Zune 30GB customers are experiencing today will self resolve as time changes to January 1.

Q: Why did this occur at precisely 12:01 a.m. on December 31, 2008?
There is a bug in the internal clock driver causing the 30GB device to improperly handle the last day of a leap year.

Q: What is Zune doing to fix this issue?
    The issue should resolve itself.

Q: Are you sure that this won't happen to all 80, 120 or other flash devices?
This issue is related to a part that is only used in Zune 30 devices.

Q: How many 30GB Zune devices are affected?
All 30GB devices are potentially affected.

Why the Zune30 suddenly rested on New Years day

If you own a zune30, and it took a break just before the new year started, don’t worry, it’s just taking a good rest from all the use that you’ve put it through since 2006. (kidding!)

Word from the internet is spreading that your zune will work again after January 1, 2009, you can turn it on on January 2 (just to be on the safe side) or as one commenter on the previous posts states, at 8pm today.

Here the explanation from the geek guys of the Zune interwebs

“The Zune's real-time clock stores the time in terms of days and seconds since January 1st, 1980. When the Zune's clock is accessed, the driver turns the number of days into years/months/days and the number of seconds into hours/minutes/seconds. Likewise, when the clock is set, the driver does the opposite.

“ok all. the issue is a bug in the driver that controls the internal clock. turns out it does not like leap years. as the date flips to 09 the device should be back to normal. let the battery die the plug in and restart once we flip the date.

more info coming on zune insider and zune.net. thanks to you all for your patience and support while we go this worked out. we will update the firmware before 2012”

All Zune 30gb worldwide = paperweight (as of now)

Way to start 2009! All Zune 30gb (in the world) are having issues when booting up. It seems that only Zune30s are affected. The device stops at the loading screen and then nothing happens. Bummer :( If you own a Zune30, check it for yourself! I don't know how Microsoft would fix this since it would not even boot. Sad..sad day for zunes around the world, especially for those outside North America (no warranty if ever)

"Customers with 30gb Zune devices may experience issues when booting their Zune hardware. We’re aware of the problem and are working to correct it. The Zune Social might be slow or inaccessible. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience!"

    - From Zune.net Support

Very weird! must have something to do with date stamps of the device, like Y2K scare.. I hope this gets fixed asap!
